A noted historic course and host of the U.S. Open course, Midlothian faced challenges with aging bunkers that weren’t in the right location or of the appropriate character for a classic golf design. Raymond Hearn was asked to make adjustments that kept the Golden Age heritage of the club.

Midlothian, a historic course with the distinction of hosting the U.S. Open, required careful attention to address the challenges posed by its aging bunkers, which no longer fit the course’s classic design. Renowned architect Raymond Hearn was brought in to restore the course, ensuring that its Golden Age heritage was preserved. The restoration focused on repositioning and redesigning bunkers, updating tees, clearing trees, improving drainage, refining fairways, and expanding greens and runoff areas. These changes were made to honor the course’s rich history while enhancing its playability for modern golfers.

“Ray was great in working with our members to keep the look and feel,” the club says. “He really fit in everything we were looking for. He was patient and he listened to all of our feedback. He was collaborative, patient and turned out a great product.”
